I Saved Nearly $ 500 In The Last Few Months With This At-Home Nail Kit

Ever since I was a kid, I've loved collecting nail polish and painting my own nails. Growing up, I was the kid who didn’t want to play outside for fear of ruining my manicure . For me, there is nothing better than a fresh set of nails, so as I got older, I started visiting nail salons, where I regularly spend $ 70 to $ 80 for a full set of nails. acrylic nails or a gel manicure . On average, this is an expense I accumulate every three weeks-talking about an expensive habit!

Last year, I discovered a nail fad called Apres Gel-X which is a type of nail extension that is supposed to be less breakable than the acrylic type but just as durable , so I decided to go to my nail salon and try them out for myself. Verdict? I love them! The problem? The cost. When my go-to nail salon closed due to COVID restrictions for a few months, I thought it would be the perfect time to invest in the Apres Gel-X Extension Kit ($ 94) and try my hand in Creates manicures worthy of the salon alone.

I immediately placed an order for the kit, complete with all the necessary poles and the LED light I needed. In addition, I rushed for a few extra items to bring the full salon experience to my own home. After many attempts and many trials and errors, I can officially say that I got it! (My first set fell in a week-whoops.) Since November, I’ve made many Gel-X sets myself, and according to my calculations, I’ve saved nearly $ 500 on salon visits . True, that money was recycled into my wardrobe budget, but the bigger picture is that I don’t have to visit a professional to fulfill my nail dreams. Did I mention that done with my nails is also my biggest confidence booster? Ahead, check out a step-by-step guide for making Apres Gel-X nail extensions at home along with some pro tips I’ve gleaned from all my experience. Then, keep scrolling to see all the cool manicures I’ve done and shop for essential supplies to enhance the nail game at home as well.

I started by preparing my nails for the cleanest application possible. I take my nail drill and put the surface of my natural nails. Usually I don’t file the actual length of my nail, but that changes depending on the design I’m going for. After buffing the surface, I make sure my cuticles are pushed and trimmed before preparing my nails with a layer of pH Bonder included in the kit. From there, I apply the Non-Acidic Gel Primer that is also included in the kit.

Now, it's time to apply a coat of Extend Gel. Be sure to use the included LED lamp to cure each nail within 30 seconds after applying this layer of polish. Once you’ve finished priming the nail, it’s time to find extension tips that fit each of your nails before buffing the bottom of each tip with your nail drill.

When you have enlarged each Gel-X tip, apply the Extend Gel to the tip how you would apply the nail glue to the press nails and use your thumb to press the tip to the corresponding natural nail. Pro Tip: Be careful! The slower and more firmly you press the tip with your nail, the less likely you are to end up with bent tips or air bubbles trapped underneath. As you press the tip into your natural nail, place your finger under the LED lamp for 10 to 20 seconds, rotate the nail under the lamp as you press down to make sure all sides are dry. (Sometimes, I go even further just a little to make sure the tip is super safe.)

Once all your extensions have been applied, the real fun begins – it's time to paint. Grab your color (Spoiler alert: It's still hard to pick a color even if you do it yourself) and start polishing. Remember to cure the nails under your LED lamp within 30 seconds after each coat. You can achieve classic solid colored nails or add designs of your choice. The possibilities are endless!
